Before
I felt like i was constantly second-guessing myself.
Was i doing too much? Too little?
Using the wrong method?
What I Didn’t Expect Was How Confusing Training Would Be
When we brought home our first dog, Doris, we were excited. She’s almost 11 years old now, But back then?
I assumed we’d just teach a few commands. Set boundaries. Build routines.
How hard could it be? Turns out… it wasn’t hard.
It was confusing.
I went online. I watched videos. I read blogs. I followed Trainers on social media. I asked friends what worked for them and what I found wasn’t clarity.
Every expert had a different opinion
Every answer created two new questions, and the more I tried to piece it all together… The more overwhelmed I felt.
It wasn’t that Doris was stubborn. And it wasn’t that I was incapable.
The real problem? I was trying to follow five different training philosophies at the same time.
No consistency. No unified system. No clear path.
“I was trying to follow five different training philosophies at the same time. No consistency. No unified system. No clear path.”
And that confusion showed up in our training. Some days I’d try one method. The next day I’d switch it up because I read something new. There was no consistency and dogs thrive on clarity
Most advice focuses on fixing “bad” behavior, establishing dominance, and correcting mistakes. But dogs don’t need complexity — they need clear cause and effect. They need to understand that “If I do something I’m supposed to, good things happen or if I don’t, I miss out on things I’d like to do”. That’s it. Not five philosophies or twenty different tactics, just consistent, reward-based clarity.
When I simplified everything around positive reinforcement and consistency, something changed. Doris became more engaged, more confident, and more responsive, and I became more confident too. Training stopped feeling like a test I was failing and started feeling predictable, even enjoyable.
