All dogs want to be good, they just need to be shown how.
We can’t expect people to be able to read our minds, or a toddler to get potty trained in a matter of days, or a baby to stop crying as soon as we ask them to stop. We have to communicate, teach our kids, and meet our babies needs. And likewise, we can’t expect our dogs to stop barking when we tell them no, we can’t expect them to behave perfectly around a 5 course meal if they haven’t been shown how to behave, and we can’t expect them to not pee on the carpet after just one mistake.
These things take time and lots of training. But there are also ways of training that in fact can make our dogs more scared of us, that can cause our dogs anxiety, and that can actually do more harm than good. Hint: punishment based training techniques are a no for us.
