6 Things I've Learned From My Adult Rescue Dog | Pupford

Adopting a rescue dog is an experience that can change your life in unexpected ways. These dogs may come with difficult histories—neglect, abandonment, or worse. Their path to trust and love can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

The saying, "I didn’t save them; they saved me," has taken on new meaning for me since I recently adopted an adult dog from a local shelter.

When I brought him home, it was clear that he had been through a lot - yet he didn’t let it stop him from being one of the happiest dogs I have ever met. Seeing his resilience has been more valuable to me than I expected, and has made me think that we could all learn a thing or two from these dogs.

Here are some of the most important things I've learned from sharing my life with him.

1. We All Have Imperfections

When I first met my rescue dog, Louie, I was struck by his visible scars and learning of his tragic history at such a young age. Despite this, he came across as the “perfect dog”. He was friendly with everyone he met, supposedly great with all dogs, and upon bringing him home I learned he was already crate trained, potty trained, and he didn’t chew up household items. I felt like I hit the jackpot with this seemingly “perfect” addition to my family.

As Louie started to decompress in my home, his not so “perfect” behaviors started to shine through. I learned that he is actually dog selective and is not friendly with every dog he meets and will occasionally bark at unfamiliar dogs on walks or in small spaces like a veterinary office. In addition to these behavioral challenges, I also learned Louie was facing multiple underlying medical conditions that needed to be addressed swiftly.

Despite the unexpected medical bills and the new precautions that I will have to take to keep him safe around other dogs, he is still perfect to me - imperfections and all.

It is easy to look at our dogs and think of all the things about them that frustrates us, behaviors we wish they didn’t have or qualities we wish we could change. But what about the things we love about them? The things that make them perfect for us?

Louie is ALWAYS happy, despite the surgeries he’s needed and the pain he has endured, he is always happy just to be with you. He also brings a smile to the face of every person he meets. No one has yet to meet him without telling me how much they adore him.

And to me, that makes him pretty perfect.

2. How to Forgive

Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things to practice, especially when someone or something has caused you pain. My rescue dog's past was filled with neglect and mistreatment, but he has an incredible ability to forgive. I have never seen Louie meet a person he doesn’t instantly love and trust, he holds no grudges or remorse even though humans were not always kind to him.

While human relationships are obviously more complicated, I still think this is a quality dog’s possess that we could all learn a thing or two from.

3. How to Enjoy the Small Things

One of the most delightful aspects of having a dog is witnessing their joy in the simplest of things—a walk in the park, a new toy, or even just a belly rub. Louie finds immense pleasure in these small moments, and his enthusiasm is contagious. You just can’t help but be happy when you’re with him.

This has reminded me to savor the little joys in my own life. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily responsibilities and overlook the small, beautiful moments. Whether it’s a sunny day, a good cup of coffee, or a quiet moment of peace, learning to appreciate these small things has brought a new level of happiness to my life - something dogs never seem to take for granted.

4. The Importance of Patience

Adapting to a new environment, overcoming fears, and learning new behaviors all take time. My rescue dog didn’t immediately adapt to his new life; it took months of patience, understanding, and consistent care before he began to show his true personality.

This has been a powerful reminder that patience is key in all areas of life. Whether it’s working on a personal goal, dealing with challenges, or building relationships, understanding that progress takes time can make the journey more manageable and rewarding. My dog’s gradual transformation has reinforced the value of being patient and giving things the time they need to develop and improve.

5. Resilience and Adaptability

Louie has faced numerous challenges, from adjusting to a new home, decompressing from a stressful shelter environment, and going through multiple medical procedures. Despite these obstacles, he has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability. His ability to bounce back from adversity and embrace new experiences has been truly inspiring.

This has taught me the importance of resilience in my own life. Life is filled with unexpected challenges and changes, and being able to adapt and persevere is crucial. My dog’s journey has shown me that resilience is not just about enduring difficulties but also about finding ways to thrive despite them.

6. Unconditional Love Is Priceless

One of the most important things Louie has shown me is the power of unconditional love. Despite everything he’s been through, he still gives love and loyalty without hesitation. Seeing how he can offer affection so freely, without holding back or expecting anything in return, has made me think more deeply about how I approach my own relationships.

His example reminds me that love doesn’t need to come with conditions or expectations. It’s made me more mindful of how I connect with others, encouraging me to be more open and genuine in my interactions.

This rings so true since I recently also adopted an adult Pit Bull cross. The Pupford training is so helpful in helping him to adapt to our household. It’s also really fun!

Thank you for reaching out and giving a home and love to an adult dog that needed you. Everyone wants and loves a puppy, but finding an adult dog to love is great and the love he gives you reflects the happiness he has in you giving him a chance.
